Projects in Jordan

Ruwwad Al-Tanmeya

The mission of Ruwwad Al-Tanmeya is to strengthen initiative and facilitate recovery from problems prioritised by members of deprived communities, through education, youth volunteerism, and grassroots organisation.

Since 2009, Ruwwad has established a strong presence for itself in the community of Jabal Al Natheef, a marginalised urban area located in eastern Amman. It is home to the Mohammad Amin Camp, an informal Palestinian refugee site with an estimated population of 54,000. Jabal Al Natheef faces many challenges, notably high rates of youth unemployment, higher than average illiteracy rates, rising school dropout rates and the absence of vital services.

One of Ruwwad's projects in the Jabal al Natheef area is to offer scholarships to youth and in return they offer their (voluntary) service to the community, working with children and adults.

Sounds of Change has been training the youth scholars of Ruwwad, who are doing weekly community services. We support them in their creative and (inter)personal development, and in implementing the musical activities in their work with young people.

MedeArts

MedeArts targets artists and professionals in various fields of art, focussing on towns and villages in Northern Jordan, and reaches out to different cities across the country. As part of the network’s main objectives, they work on cultural and artistic exchange and promote joint work between professional and amateur artists, by helping them to professionalise their cultural and artistic content.

MedeArts is based in Irbid, in the north of Jordan. In this region many different cultures come together (Jordanian, Syrian, Palestinian, Yemeni, Iraqi, Egyptian). Although Irbid is the second largest city in Amman, with a population of almost 2 million people, there is almost no space for art and creative projects. Irbid is a very conservative city and it hosts over 140.000 Syrian refugees. The economically challenging circumstances faced by young people result in unemployment, social isolation, and other problems.

Sounds of Change and MedeArts first collaborated in 2019, to break down barriers between the different cultures. We have created a strong network of artists through which communities can strive to reach their potential - inspire each other though sharing, experimentation, practicing and performing new music. The aim is to activate artists from all over Jordan to engage with their environment and strengthen local communities with interactive musical activities.
