Lucas studied double bass and bass guitar at the Conservatory of Amsterdam. During his studies he built a successful career as a pop and jazz musician with his bands, including Room Eleven and Tin Men and the Telephone. As a double bass player he performed with jazz artists such as Benjamin Herman, Yuri Honing, Anton Goudsmit, Oene van Geel and Hans Dulfer and with pop artists such as Typhoon, Kyteman, Marcel van Veendendal and Spike (Di-Rect), Simone White, Roosbeef and Caro Emerald.
Lucas played in music theatre productions by Orkater and made several theatre performances with the Dutch actor Bram van der Vlugt and his children Floris and Hester van der Vlugt.
Lucas played international tours in Europe, Canada, South Africa, Japan and the Middle East. He performed at festivals such as Sziget, Montreal Jazz Festival and North Sea Jazz Festival.
A few years after studying at the conservatory, he felt a need for personal growth. He started looking for A few years after completing his studies at the conservatory, he felt the need for personal growth and more meaning. He started looking for other ways to use the power of music in the world. Lucas then studied at the Knowmads Business School and worked with the power of music in various places around the world. During this search, he came across the work of Musicians without Borders and worked for them as a trainer for two years.
After this, Lucas started the Sounds of Change foundation in 2017, with the aim of training changemakers in using the power of music to enable psychological and social change. Sounds of Change currently trains professionals from (local) partner organizations, such as schools, NGOs and community centers in conflict areas, so that they can strengthen their work in education and psychosocial support (PSS) with music.
Lucas has worked with children and trained caregivers, aid workers and psychologists in refugee camps and marginalized communities in Lebanon, Jordan, Tunisia, Northeast Syria, Northern Iraq, Rwanda, Tanzania, Iraq, Egypt, India, Ukraine, Serbia, Greece, Turkey and the West Bank (Palestine).
Lucas has taken courses in Nonviolent Communication (NVC), Art of Hosting, Rock & Water, is trained to work with music in special education and has studied at Knowmads, an alternative, creative business school in Amsterdam that focuses on social entrepreneurship. Lucas is also trained in Trauma Sensitive Support by Trauma International.
